Gala Italia: Eat, Drink & be Merry

Last year in 2015, a friend was kind enough to share the 30th commemoration Gala Italia grand tasting event in the inbox -and since wine tasting is part of the social agenda, why not indulge in celebrating the 31st anniversary, presented by the Italian Wine and Food Institute.

On February 18, 300 guests came together once again at the Pierre Hotel to drink, eat and be merry.

The IWFI is a non-profit organization focusing on highlighting high quality Italian culinary creations, wines, and additional products via seminars, tastings, and other social events.

Since 1985, Gala Italia has circled around the world – including St. Petersburg, Milan, Verona, Palermo, Berlin, Prague and major US cities – and today in New York.

The event kicked off with a wine reception and guests had the chance to sample a few wines, munch on delish appetizers before the dinner and award ceremony. Soon thereafter, the grand ballroom was finally ready for the remainder of the nights activities.

Dinner, paired with wines which included: 2006 Ferrari, Riserva Lunelli, Trento DOC;  2014 Planeta, Chardonnay, Sicilia IGT; 2013 Tenuta Santa Caterina, Silente delle Marne, Monferrato Bianco DOC; 2011 Marchesi Antinori, Villa Antinori Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva;  2008 Tenute Lunelli, Carapace, Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG; 2008 Condè, Sangiovese di Romagna DOC Riserva; 2007 Mezzacorona, NOS Teroldego Rotaliano DOC Riserva; 2012 Bertani, Villa Arvedi, Amarone Della Valpolicella Valpantena DOCG and 2011 Sorrentino, Fior di Ginestre, and Passito IGT Pompeiano.

Dr. Lucio Caputo, the President of IWFI, and who holds additional prestigious positions with other organizations, as well, was the head speaker for the night.

Last but not least, what better way to conclude a wine tasting and award ceremony with some very handsome eye-candy strutting their stuff and showcasing Eredi Pisanò’s apparel from Rome.

Is it a coincidence this was also the last day of fashion week? Even better!

Italian Wine Excellence Award: Adam Strum, editor, and publisher of Wine Enthusiast magazine Leader Awards to America’s first female Master of Wine

Wine Leader Awards to America’s first female Master of Wine: Mary Ewing-Mulligan, MW, director of the International Wine Center; New York Times columnist Florence Fabricant.

Fabio Granato, who — with the partner of Vittorio Assaf — promote Italian wine and food around the world through their restaurants Serafina and Le Cirque were the “masters of ceremonies.” Sirio Maccioni’s son, Mario, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.
