Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts Gala

On Wednesday, June 15, the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts held its 37th Anniversary Gala and hosted by the historic Flushing Town Hall. Since its inception in 1979, the organization has committed to serving as stewards, advocates, and providers supporting local immigrant, national, and international artists.

This is done by managing the programming of the historical 1862 landmark by developing partnerships and collaborations that assist in enhancing arts education and hands-on learning for the arts-curious/enthusiasts and professional artists, alike.

The event featured performances by students at JHS 189, who this May presented a production of Aladdin at Flushing Town Hall, the New York Chinese Chorus, and the acrobatic and theatrical duo Acrobuffos, the recipient of a Flushing Town Hall grant providing free space to perfect their craft. Additionally, Chinese juggling master Yang Xiao Di provided entertainment during the cocktail reception and dinner break.

Attendees included Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, New York City Council Majority Leader, Jimmy Van Bramer, the honorees of the night, New York 1 Anchor/Reporter Rocco Vertuccio serving as the Emcee of the night; and additional distinguished guests who come to show support to the educational workshops and other programs offered at Flushing Town Hall.

“I always love this place; it’s just the greatest place,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “We all come together every year for this gala, but so much happens within these walls through the year. I consider Flushing Town Hall the gift we give to the rest of the city.”

As New York City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer presented the award to Council Member Koo, Majority Leader Van Bramer said “he is a prince among the members of the City Council; he’s always there for all of us. Peter, thank you so much for representing your district as well as you do; thank you for representing Flushing Town Hall as well as you do.”

Congratulations to the following honorees:

Peter Koo: NYC Council Member. During his acceptance speech, Council Member Koo said, “Flushing Town Hall is a gem in the heart of Flushing.”

Amy Mak Chan: President of Celestial Love Foundation, Inc.

Rev. Daryl G. Ware: Music teacher of JHS 189.
