We are only a day into April, and while the weather is starting to deliver hope of warmer temperatures – outdoors, we didn’t mind spending the evening indoors while attending the 2015 Champions for Children Benefit, presented by NYC Mission Society at the beautiful Mandarin Hotel at Columbus Circle.
NYC Mission Society is an organization that provides programs to help the youth and their families pave the way to a promising future from poverty and creating success in a better environment through educational, restorative justice, enriching cultures and developing positive long-term programs to combat violence, and provide career opportunities.
Since the organization’s inception in 1812, it is perhaps been around longer than any other human services organization in New York City.
13,000 children and families throughout New York City, each year, are lucky enough to be under this organization and have enhanced their lives through supportive services, community events, that work together to make a difference and improve lives.
On April 1, the annual Gala was held and the following is an important statement highlighted by Elsie McCabe Thompson, President of the NYC Mission Society.
“This year, we held our benefit on a day known for practical jokes so we can trumpet our message that fighting poverty is no laughing matter. Too many children and families in our city and country are in desperate need of help to overcome poverty. We at the NYC Mission Society take this need seriously, and vow to continue leading the fight to create new opportunities and improve lives.”
This year’s Master of Ceremonies was Bill Ritter (anchor at WABC-TV and 20/20 correspondent), while The Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats, an ensemble of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, provided the entertainment.
Guests on the roster list included Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., New York City Council Member Jumaane Williams, Arturo O’Farrill, the founder of ALJA, David Banks, Erik Bottcher, Geoffrey Bradfield, Valentino Carlotti, Natasha Das, former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, Joseph Fichera, L. Priscilla Hall, Brooke Laing, Gregory Mays, Scott Nammacher, Amelia Ogunlisi, James Peterson, Cole Rumbough, Derek Steinhiser, Elinor Tatum, Sheena Wright, B. Michael, Marc Anthony, and Victor De Souza.
Congratulations to NYC Mission Society for raising over $600,000 during the Gala and to all honorees listed below.
