It’s one thing to start a manic Monday with schedules, multitasking on calendars and all the shenanigans that make you realize the weekend is over. However, if a warm “Spring” day calls to end the day with giving back – then do it.
On May 16, the Grand Hyatt located on 42nd Street, hosted the 2016 Annual “Theater & Therapy” Gala to celebrate those who have contributed to the Creative Alternatives of New York. Founded in 1969, under the leadership of Janet Levy, was first known as the Imagination Workshop and used theater workshops as therapy with patients in the psychiatric units at the Mount Sinai Hospital.
Since then, the program has transitioned to tapping into and utilizing creative arts as healing to increase empowerment in children and adults who have endured trauma and help rebuild lives.
Fast forward to the Gala, where guests came out to assist in raising funds for the organization to continue its good work around the metropolitan area. Cocktails, a smorgasbord of delicious appetizers kept guests busy during the silent auction.
Guests bid on beautiful getaways, jewelry, tickets to Broadway productions, raffles, and other exciting items prior to the dinner, a live auction, and a special duet performance by Ann Hampton Callaway & Cady Huffman -and Kelli O’Hara sang as well after receiving her award.
Co-hosted and special performances by Broadway veteran Ann Hampton Callaway (TONY award nominee for Swing!), Broadway actress, Jazz singer and Platinum Award winning writer for Broadway, recording artists and television) and Cady Huffman (TONY award winner (The Producers and nominee for The Will Rogers Follies, Broadway and TV actress, regular food judge on Food Network’s Iron Chef America), additional guests included André Bishop – Artistic Director at Lincoln Center Theater, Producing Artistic Director at Lincoln Center Theater and Nikki M.
